This month, gifts and gift-giving can seem inescapable. What’s the most memorable gift, tangible or emotional, you received this year?
I’ve received a lot of wonderful, memorable gifts. The one I’d like to focus on here, though, was neither tangible nor primarily emotional. Two dear and extremely competent colleagues of mine were given tenure recently after a long period of uncertainty about their (= our) future in the department. I can’t begin to express the feelings of relief, calm and confidence in the future this has brought along with it – these feelings certainly go way beyond the purely professional domain.
