December 21 – Future self

Imagine yourself five years from now. What advice would you give your current self for the year ahead? (Bonus: Write a note to yourself 10 years ago. What would you tell your younger self?)

This is a bit of a weird one, but I’ll give it a go…

You’re still young, in body as well as spirit, and a new number at the beginning of your age is not going to change that. You’ve made such progress in accepting how old you are and how things have improved as you have got older, so why should that stop? There are important things to be done in the year ahead, so it’s time to focus…

The advice to my former self seems much clearer…

You’ll be swept off your feet by something that seems to be the answer to all your prayers, and it will suspend you at cloud nine level for some years. You’ll invest all your hopes and dreams in it, and yet it will plunge you into total despair. Not once but twice. You will feel as if all has been lost, and you will wish that it had never happened.

Never regret it, though. Never wish it away. Never forget the enduring friendships, shared passions and knowledge that would never have come into being without it. The positive forces you have built up through dealing with it all will make you stronger, more resilient, wiser and clearer in what you want. After a rollercoaster ride, you will end the decade the happiest, calmest and most contented you have ever been, looking back on your past gullibility with a wry smile…
