Let’s meet again, for the first time. If you could introduce yourself to strangers by another name for just one day, what would it be and why?
It might (or might not) be amusing to be called Erika Mustermann (this is the German female equivalent of the English placeholder name A. N. Other). For a start, German people ought not to have problems pronouncing the name (my real surname gets mangled phonologically and/or orthographically on a daily basis), plus it would be amusing to see how people reacted – I’d relish putting on a faux-peeved reaction if someone suggested I was having them on about the name. I wonder how many real women there are in Germany who genuinely have this name, and how they deal with it.
